Dhania / Coriander
Dhania / Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) is a herb in the family Apiaceae. It is also known as dhania or cilantro. All parts of the plant are edible, but the fresh leaves and the dried seeds (which are both a herb and a spice) are the parts most traditionally used in cooking. Coriander powder is used as a common spice in most Indian curries. You will be surprised to know that the seeds, oils, and extracts of this plant promote the secretion of insulin and reduce blood sugar levels. People who have low blood sugar or take diabetes medication should practice caution with coriander because it is so effective in lowering blood sugar. Coriander offers several antioxidants, which prevent cellular damage caused by free radicals. Its antioxidants have been shown to fight inflammation. Research has also indicated that coriander helps in lowering blood pressure as well as cholesterol in our body. Furthermore, the seeds contain anti-fungal and microbial properties. So, whether used as a seasoning in the lentil curry or vegetables, the goodness stays forever.
