Kal Bionics has built an indigenous bionic arm that does not only costs nearly 10 times cheaper at around Rs 2.5 to 3 lakh than the ones available in developed countries (Rs 30-60 lakh), but can also accomplish more number of tasks. Unlike the conventional prosthetics arms available in the market that are either cosmetic in nature or are capable of limited movements like the myoelectric prosthetics, a bionic arm functions like a real one because of a better grip. The functioning of an arm is very complex. For instance, if you want to tie a shoe lace, the grip required is very different from that of the grip one needs to hold a bottle. Typically a bionic arm has 14 grips but the one developed by Kal Bionics has 16. KalArm will get updated on its own as and when more types of grips are taught to the arm. Therefore, customers need not keep buying new arms. The arm can also be customised as per the unique requirements of the customer.
