Also known as an LEI Code or LEI Number, its purpose is to identify legal entities using a single global database. Who needs an LEI? 1 What is an LEI renewal? An LEI is always valid for one year and must therefore be renewed annually. In the course of this, the data provided is checked to ensure that it is up to date. An LEI can also be renewed with another provider, which first results in a transfer from one provider to another. The Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF) supports the implementation and use of the Legal Entity Identifier (LEI). The foundation is backed and overseen by the LEI Regulatory Oversight Committee. Register-LEI is a Registration Agent (RA) cooperating with the Local Operating Unit (LOU) Ubisecure. 3 Where can I look up LEIs? You can find issued Legal Entity Identifiers either by entering the LEI number or the company name on our Search page, or the official listing on the website of the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation. 4 Who can apply for an LEI? You can apply for a Legal Entity Identifier for your company if you are either a. an authorized representative with signatory powers of the applying company, or b. recognized by another authorized representative of the company to apply for the LEI. 5 What is a Legal Entity Identifier (LEI)? The Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a 20-character, alpha-numeric code based on the ISO 17442 standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It connects to key reference information that enables clear and unique identification of legal entities participating in financial transactions. Each LEI contains information about an entity’s ownership structure and thus answers the questions of ‘who is who’ and ‘who owns whom’. Simply put, the publicly available LEI data pool can be regarded as a global directory, which greatly enhances transparency in the global marketplace. At the end of 2017, the Implementing Regulation (EU) No 2017/105 came into effect, requiring the use of an LEI number for reporting all derivatives transactions since January 2018 All companies participating in the global financial market are now identified, networks made more transparent. As an example, LEI numbers are already being used under the European Market Infrastructure Regulation (EMIR) to identify counterparties to over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives.
