Established in August 1996, The National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) is one of the world's largest securities depositories. NSDL, a Market Infrastructure Institution (MII), is a key player in the nation's critical Capital Market Structure. Although India had a vibrant capital market which is more than a century old, the paper-based settlement of trades caused substantial problems like bad delivery and delayed transfer of title, etc. The enactment of the Depositories Act in August 1996 paved the way for the establishment of NSDL. Using innovative and flexible technology systems, NSDL's vision is to bring Technology, Trust, and Reach to all the partners and players of the Indian capital market. The Indian economy is propelling at a much faster rate. The 1990s was a decade of significant change and transformation in India. This period witnessed economic liberalization, political developments, technological advancements, and cultural shifts. This decade also marked a crucial phase in the evolution of India's financial markets, which laid the foundation for the significant growth of the Indian Capital Market since then. As we have witnessed creation of massive infrastructures like port, dams, hydel power etc, NSDL equally contributed to building a massive electronic infrastructure, which today holds securities value worth more than $4 Trillion. Following the introduction of the Depositories Act in 1996, NSDL commenced its operations in November 1996 and became India’s first and leading depository embarking on a transformative journey to change the landscape of India's financial markets. NSDL coined the word ‘demat’ and have since leveraged its technological infrastructure to cater the diverse needs of the securities market.
