With a long traditional background of trading, the Agarwal siblings, Shri. Bajrang Lal, Shri. Ram Awatar, Late Shri. Raj Kumar, Shri. Sushil Kumar and Shri. Suresh Kumar had been involved in trading of food products, before they ventured into the salt business. Started in 1975 at Kharagpur, West Bengal, the group soon became the market leaders in the salt industry. Soon their products were selling successfully in nearby eastern states like Orissa and Bihar. Finding an untapped potential market in South India, the group set up a unit at Tuticorin to capture the South Indian market in 1980. The group was the first to act upon government’s initiative to overcome thyroid related diseases by iodisation of salt. First of its kind, state-of-art salt iodisation unit of salt was started in the year 1988 which has won remarkable “Best Small Scale Unit” Award honoured by the DIC, Tuticorin in the year 1999. Hunger to grow further, the group planned to set up a salt refinery unit in Gandhidham, Gujarat, which was successfully completed in the year 2008 having an annual refining capacity of 1,00,000 tonnes. Which is involved in making Freeflow Iodised salt, Refined Iodised salt, and special grade industrial and low hardness salt having hardness below 100ppm. Since the importation of salt into West Bengal is still governed by the quota regime, the unit has a special annualised program of more than 18 Railway Rakes per annum, issued by the Salt Department, Jaipur to cater to the rural consumers in the entire state of West Bengal and to overcome the iodine related deficiencies. Our success can be exemplified by the fact that the West Bengal Government has granted the group the license to sell our products under the Public Distribution System in five major districts within West Bengal for more than 6 years in a row. Its not only salt the group has now ventured into fields of petrochemicals, minerals, abrasives, automobile and has kept its flag in # 1 status.
