• What is the liquid inside the glass bulb of a sprinkler? It contains a non-toxic glycerin solution that expands with heat, causing the bulb to burst and activate the sprinkler.
• Why are sprinkler bulbs different colours? Bulb colours indicate temperature ratings as per NFPA 13 – orange (57 °C), red (68 °C), yellow (79 °C), green (93 °C), and blue (141 °C)
• Why do bulb sizes differ? 3 mm bulbs are quick response (QR) and 5 mm bulbs are standard response (SR); smaller bulbs activate faster.
• How can I identify an HD Fire sprinkler? HD sprinklers are marked with “HD” on the frame and have a Sprinkler Identification Number (SIN) on the deflector.
• What care the various finished of HD sprinklers? HD Sprinklers can be supplied with brass, chrome or white finish.
• How do pressure and flow relate for sprinklers? Flow (Q) = K √P, where K is the sprinkler’s K-factor and P is pressure (bar). For example, a K80 sprinkler at 1 bar gives 80 LPM.
• What is the minimum operating pressure? Typically 0.5 bar (7 psi). Always verify per the model’s technical catalogue.
• Are there spacing limitations? Spacing should be followed as per NFPA 13 on hazard classification.
• Why isn’t minimum spacing shown on every sheet? It’s shown only when a listing specifies a different minimum.
• Can I use concealed cover plates from another model? No. It will not be suitable for use with other model of sprinkler.
• Can HD sprinklers be used in both residential and commercial applications? Yes. Confirm model and hazard class before use.
• What does SIN mean? SIN (Sprinkler Identification Number) is an alphanumeric code identifying the model, K-factor, and response type.
• Why can’t I order by SIN only? SIN doesn’t include finish, temperature rating, or mounting style. Provide full details when ordering.
• Why do some SINs change? As designs are improved, obsolete models receive new SINs. Always refer to the current HD technical catalogue.
• Does HD offer non-ferrous sprinklers for MRI or sensitive areas? Yes. Non-ferrous and low-magnetic sprinklers are available for such environments.
• How should dry sprinklers be installed? Install only in the side outlet of a tee (not an elbow or coupling). Seal properly when installed in refrigerated areas.
• What are proper storage and handling precautions? Store in a dry, temperature-controlled area. Do not drop or handle by the bulb; keep sprinklers in cartons until use.
• How do I choose the correct temperature rating? As per NFPA 13, select a temperature rating higher than maximum expected ambient temperature & the proximity of sprinkler to heat sources or per local code / authority having jurisdiction. For instance: Ordinary temperature sprinklers (57-77 °C) are used in normal environments such as offices, hotels, or warehouses with controlled temperature. Intermediate temperature sprinklers (79-107 °C) are used near localized heat sources like lighting fixtures, skylights, or warm air ducts. High temperature and above are for industrial or process areas with sustained elevated ambient temperatures (boiler rooms, foundries, etc.).
• Can quick-response and standard-response sprinklers be used together? Yes, if in the same compartment and compliant with NFPA 13. Verify with the authority having jurisdiction and refer to local codes.
• Can concealed sprinklers be installed without a ceiling? No. Concealed sprinklers are tested and approved for installation only under a ceiling.
• What finishes are available for cover plates? White, chrome, brass, and custom RAL colours are standard; decorative finishes can be considered on request.
• Are HD sprinklers UL Listed and FM Approved? Yes. HD sprinklers carry UL Listing / FM Approval or both, depending on the model. Always refer to HD sprinkler catalogue for details.
