Cassia angustifolia (Senna) was used in the form of senna pods, as a laxative. Modern medicine has used extracts since at least the 1950s as a laxative. The active ingredients are Calcium Sennosides and several senna glycosides which interact with immune cells in the colon. The FDA approves senna leaf as an oral laxative. It can help produce a bowel movement in 6 to 12 hours after ingestion.
