GrupAlam started its journey in the early twenties of the last century with its founder, Md. Hanif. Initially, the company was set up as a rawhide and skin trading centre in North Bihar. Even at a time of severe economic and political instability and a lack of infrastructure, the trading centre prospered and two more such centres were added in the next two decades. In the year 1962, recognizing the great potential of overseas trade, Maqubul Alam & Co. was formed. The company made initial forays into European markets by exporting dry salted skins. Later the export of Wet Blue Leather was initiated. By 1968 the need for further expansion was felt and it was with this aim in mind that tannery was built in Calcutta. The nomenclature of the existing company was changed to Alam Tannery and production commenced in 1970. Initial product line mainly focused on Wet Blue Goat Skins, Gloving Leathers and Shoe Upper Leathers in Crust. By Late seventies large scale export of finished leather was also taking place. Export horizons were widened to include Spain. Sweden, and Czechoslovakia apart from the existing markets of the former G.D.R. USSR, Poland and Italy. Witnessed a major diversification in product lines and the upholstery unit started manufacturing sofa & chair covers as a separate division of Alam Tannery. In keeping with international fashion trends the company also diversified into production of leather goods, exporting to Germany, Scandinavia, UK, Belgium, France, Greece, USA Australia and other countries. The company’s product mix today includes finished upholstery leather, cut & sewn chair & sofa covers, bag leathers, gloving leathers and leathers for shoes and other footwear. Today Group Alam has come a long way since its inception. A fast growing company it has registered impressive exports performances. A dedicated task force that works in tandem, ongoing research, technological update and stringent quality checks at every stage of manufacture keeps the group far ahead of mainstream competition. With the present liberalized economic scenario in India, Group Alam is now all set to make even further inroads into the fiercely competitive global markets.
