The Uttar Pradesh New & Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) is focused on the development of solar energy in India due to limited conventional energy reserves, environmental impacts, energy security, energy access, and climate change challenges. Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology is an attractive option with abundant solar resources, modular technology, and zero fuel costs over 25-30 years. The Government of Uttar Pradesh aims to achieve 10700 MW of solar capacity by 2022, with 4300 MW from decentralized and rooftop-scale solar projects. Power generated can be used for self-consumption or fed into the grid. Rooftop SPV systems can replace DG gensets during load shedding. The price of solar power is at par with or lower than commercial tariffs. In grid-connected systems, DC power from SPV panels is converted to AC power and fed to the grid.
