Assam Petro-Chemicals Ltd. (APL) is a state-level public sector undertaking of the Govt. of Assam, incorporated on 22nd April 1971. The foundation stone was laid at Namrup for the production of Methanol and Formalin. AIDC promoted the company for the manufacture of Methanol from Natural Gas, making APL the first petrochemical complex in India to use natural gas as feedstock, with Formalin as its downstream product. The company started commercial production in June 1976. Despite market challenges after a ban on the timber industry and the closure of a key consumer plant, APL expanded its market to the rest of the country, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Nepal. The company has successfully implemented a mega expansion project with a 500 TPD Methanol plant and a 200 TPD Formaldehyde plant, with the Methanol plant dedicated to the nation in April 2023. A fourth unit, the 200 TPD Boitamari Plant, was commissioned in September 2025, further strengthening its production capacity and market leadership in Eastern India.
