Within a decade, we became the specification for projects that couldn't afford to compromise: state government buildings, celebrity residences, and the flagship developments of builders who are now household names. Liberalization brought global brands with global marketing budgets. Many Indian manufacturers sold out or became assemblers for foreign designs. We stayed independent. We kept engineering and manufacturing in Bangalore. Four decades later, the families who specified Toyama for their first homes are specifying it for their children's homes.
