The Jawaharlal Nehru Custom House is the biggest Custom House in the country in terms of containers handled, documents filed and revenue generated. It is one of the 11 major ports of India and was commissioned on 26th May, 1989. The port is situated along the eastern shore of Mumbai Harbour, southeastward of Elephanta Island. Jawaharlal Nehru Port is an all weather tidal port and it is the only Indian port built to international standards, with a high level of automation and computerized functioning. It was built with a view to de-congest Mumbai port and to serve as a hub port for this region. The Jawaharlal Nehru Custom House is located at Sheva, Tal. Uran, Dist. Raigad, of Maharashtra, close to Jawaharlal Nehru Port. The Custom House moved to the building it occupies now on 14th August 2003. This building was constructed at a cost of Rs 20 crores. Prior to 14th August 2003, JNCH was located in the adjoining Port User’s Building.
