Absorbable Sutures

Absorbable sutures, a revolutionary development in surgical procedures, are designed to provide temporary wound support until the tissue naturally heals. Unlike their non-absorbable counterparts, these sutures are broken down and absorbed by the body over time, eliminating the need for removal and reducing the risk of infection. Crafted from natural materials like catgut or synthetic polymers that the body can easily break down, such as polyglycolic acid, polyglactin, and poliglecaprone, absorbable sutures are meticulously engineered to maintain tensile strength for varying durations—ranging from a few days to several weeks—depending on the type of tissue and healing rate.

Absorbable suture materials are an excellent choice for the closure of surgical wounds. They provide strength, tensile strength and durability, and flexibility, and can be used in a wide range of medical procedures. The most common absorbable suture material is polyglycolic acid. Polyglycolic acid is a synthetic suture use in general surgical procedures since 1978. The material is highly absorbable by the body; the average time it takes for polyglycolic acid to dissolve in the body is one month.
